Overview
“There is a simple, communicative, free and intrinsic emotion in movement. My work explores the wide varieties of movement.  My body initiates and guides each painting. I often film myself in this initial process of tracing, putting the accent on impulsion, rhythms, repetitions, balance and imbalance. After I integrate the colors, affecting the initial trace, restructuring the shapes and how they interact, leading to a dialogue, an artwork.”

Caroline Denervaud is seen as an established mid-career contemporary artist, who was born in Lausanne, Switzerland during 1978. A dancer by training, she studied Contemporary Dance at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, and later studied at l’École des Beaux-Arts and Studio Berçot in Paris. She has been living and working in her studio in Paris, France for many years. Denervaud’s work is movement-heavy and relies on a complete immersion in emotions. Dancing was Denervaud’s passion, her first way to express herself. Her body is the best creative tool. She began to move (dance) on large-sized papers and record the movements on video. She adds ink to make the trace visible so it could be visually remembered. The pronounced lines with an organic softness mimic the natural curves and motions of her body. Color came later. Her practice spans from textile-based embroideries and drawings to photographic collaborations. On the ground, lying on the canvas, the artist moves on a surface that records the rhythms. The traces keep some contours of a human presence in motion, translated into a sensitive geometry. This process stirs awake a long- standing anthropocentric tradition, articulating a conception of the world from the proportions of a singular figure. The self. From the Renaissance’s Vitruvian Man to Modernism’s Modulor, these icons of engineering created new eras by advocating for their anatomies as reference points. At times humorous, deviant yet charming, Denervaud’s work is thought provoking; her gentle stitches embroidery themselves in one’s memory. The process of her work is just as much the art as is the finished work.
